 | Description | |
A member of the Realist avant-garde in Brussels, Meunier was interested in scenes from everyday life, even in religious works. Although the artist drew on traditional images of Christ (long hair, beard, and a gaunt face), he also emphasized aspects that encourage the viewer's involvement and empathy toward the subject, such as the realistic depiction of the facial features, the direct gaze, and the slightly parted lips, which seem ready to speak.
