Description

In this work French peasants celebrate the centennial of the founding of the First Republic in 1792 by dancing in a chain around three liberty trees and two female figures representing the First and Third Republics. Rousseau, known as Le Douanier because of his long career as a customs official, copied the dancers from a popular magazine illustration, but the rest of the composition seems to have been inspired by parades staged in Paris.
