 | Description | |
Immensely popular among eighteenth-century collectors, Chardin gave modest objects monumentality by arranging them in geometric groupings. Most still life specialists in this period aimed to elevate their work -considered less significant than portraiture or religious and historical subjects- by painting opulent displays of luxury goods or allegories about the passage of time. By contrast, Chardin crafted spare studies of form and light, inspiring later painters such as Paul Cézanne.
