 | Description | |
Robert popularized the painting of ruins, often adding characters who are blithely indifferent to the evocative signs of fallen greatness that surround them. This scene was painted during his years in Rome. In the crumbling, overgrown remains of an imaginary Rome basilica, dappled sunlight illuminates a peasant girl taunting a praying monk while her companions attempt to steal flowers from a makeshift shrine.
