 | Description | |
De Troy perfected the category of painting called "tableaux de mode", depictions of scenes from upper-class life, with an emphasis on sumptuous costumes, rich interiors, and hints of amorous intrigue. In this work, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1737, ball-goers partially disguised by cloaks and masks prepare to depart. In "return from the Ball", a companion piece, the group relaxes the party.
