 | Roman Charity | | Description | |
According to ancient Roman legend, the aging Cimon was unjustly condemned to starvation in prison. Cimon was saved by his daughter Pero, who secretly nourished him at her breast. Pero's extraordinary act exemplified the concept of charity. Greuze made this oil sketch in preparation for a history painting (never completed) intended for submission to the Paris Salon of 1769. Greuze's remarkable facility with the brush intensified the drama in this work. | More pictures | |
