 | Description | |
Tiepolo painted at least twenty-one versions of the subject of Saint Rocco in the early 1730s, all for members of a religious society at the Church of San Rocco in Venice. As this example and the nearby version show, Tiepolo brought an astonishing variety to these works, presenting the saint in a novel way each time. The artist clearly used the same model, but altered the setting as well as the figure's age, social class, and pose, establishing a new emotional tone with each picture.
