Saint Rocco (also called Saint Roch) relinquished his family fortune in the 1300s and traveled from France to Italy as a pilgrim, dedicating himself to curing victims of the plague. Contracting the disease himself, Rocco withdrew to the forest, where a dog brought him bread and healed his wounds by licking them.
