 | Description | |
This painting served as the model for the large mural decorations above the altar of Santa Maria in Campo Marzio, Rome. In keeping with the dedication of the church to the Virgin Mary, the painting celebrates her purity, or Immaculate Conception, as envisioned by Saint John the Evangelist, who appears atop a cloud at right. By overlapping the real architecture of the church with his painted vision, the artist enhanced the illusion for worshippers.
