 | Description | |
These two companion paintings illustrate episodes from Torquato Tasso's "Jerusalem Delivered" (1580), an epic poem celebrating the First Crusade of 1099 through tales of Christian heroism and courtly love. Two knights are first shown breaking a spell that the sorceress Armida cast on their comrade Rinaldo; his military spirit reawakened, Rinaldo then strikes down an apparition of Armida in the enchanted forest. | More pictures | |
