 | Description | |
Painted when Domenichino was establishing himself as a leading classical painter in Rome, this composition is based on the principles of Renaissance design. It also reflects the new naturalism of the Baroque age, which is apparent in the highly individualized face of Christ, with its beseeching expression, arouses sympathy for his plight. The enamel-like surface and radiant colors result from painting on a tinned copper surface.
