 | Description | |
A finished study for the high altar of the Church of Saints Celsus and Julian in Rome, this important early commission helped establish Batoni as the leading painter in the city. The compositional solidity and solemnity of the figures derive from the artist's study of ancient Roman sculpture and earlier painters such as Raphael and Reni. the delicate gestures and subtle coloring, however, are products of Batoni's own artistic imagination.
