Description

Louise de Keroualle (1649-1734) worked as a spy for the French king Louis XIV before becoming the celebrated mistress of the English monarch Charles II. Lely painted her portrait shortly there-after. Her loosely draped clothing, languid pose, and sensuous features epitomize the ideal beauty of the period. Such elegant images of the aristocracy established Lely's reputation as a leading English portraitist of the late 1600s.
