Description

This is one of the latest and most sensitive likenesses by Gainsborough, who was the leading portraitist in England. It was commissioned by Hollis (1732-1799), the fourth earl of Essex, to commemorate his presentation of a silver cup to Thomas Clutterbuck (1707-1792). The cup and the picture were bestowed upon Clutterbuck in recognition of his services as the sheriff of Hertfordshire.
