Honthorst spent the years 1610-1621 in Rome, where he fell under the spell of Caravaggio's revolutionary style. The Dutch painter adapted the Italian artist's theatrical lightning to night scenes in which the source of illumination is prominently shown. Here torchlight poignantly isolates and emphasizes Christ's humble acceptance of mockery as ignorant men cry, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
