This painting was commissioned by Cardinal Maffeo Barberini (1568-1644) for his family's chapel in Rome. The unusual subject was chosen because the chapel commemorated the site where Sebastian's body was recovered from the main Roman sewer (Cloaca Maxima), where it had been thrown after his martyrdom.
