 | Description | |
This painting is a remarkable exception to most state portraits because it represents character rather than the trapping of power. While the composition is traditional for papal portraiture, it exhibits Guercino's keen understanding of his subject. Gregory (1554-1623) had promoted the artist, who was from the pope's hometown of Bologna. Here Guercino sympathetically depicted his patron at the end of his life, worn by the cares of office and failing health.
