 | Description | |
An inscription on this unidentified portrait indicates that the painting was made in 1632, when the sitter was twenty-seven years old. It was originally made as a pendant to Portrait of a Young Woman, acquired by J. Paul Getty in 1938. The pair are now reunited for the first time since they were separated in 1927.
Pickenoy excelled at creating handsome portraits, lavishing great attention on the sitters' costumes. Here the nuances of black patterned silk and precisely rendered lace set off the man's features. This painting is the pendant, or companion, to the artist's "Portrait of a Young Woman", displayed nearby. Although the identities of the sitters are unknown, the two works were almost certainly created to commemorate a marriage. | More pictures | |
