 | Description | |
Influenced by his teacher, Jacob van Ruisdael, Hobbema specialized in wooded landscapes, exploring the delightful complexities of dappled light on familiar forms. Here two meandering paths, populated by inhabitants and travelers, draw the eye into the scene. Composed wholly in the studio, this painting captures the atmospheric qualities of the outdoors; Hobbema's lively and varied brushwork evokes the wet, muddy ground, the weathered cottages, and the wind-tossed branches of sturdy oaks.
