In this painting, Nicolaes Maes almost exactly copied Albrecht Dürer's 1504 engraving of the Nativity. Before he began his career ad a portrait painter, Maes painted a small number of biblical subjects. Here the dramatic lighting and meticulous brushwork are reminiscent of the early style of his teacher, Rembrandt.
