 | Description | |
Verhulst achieved extraordinary naturalism in this bust of the Dutch legislator Jacob van Reygersberg (1625-1675) by skillfully rendering the varied textures of hair, lace, flesh, and armor, as well as the spontaneous turn of the head. The artist softened the termination of the bust at the chest and shoulders by introducing decorative scrolls at the bottom, which also serve to lead the viewer's gaze up toward the subject's face.
