 | Description | |
This scene is an imaginary composite of various elements of the Dutch landscape, presented from an unusually high vantage point. Sweeping clouds dominate the distant, dramatic sky, emphasizing the low, flat expanse of land. Panoramic landscape views originated in Dutch prints and drawings; Koninck monumentalized them in the large-scale paintings that became his specialty.
