 | Description | |
A successful portrait painter, Van der Helst was one of the founders of the Amsterdam painters' guild. Here he depicted an unknown man who literally wears his wealth and social position on his sleeve. Van der Helst meticulously re-created the glitter of gold thread in his fabulous embroidery and braid trimmings. He captured the man's sense of elegance with his casually draped jacket and gloves, worn large to elongate his fingers.
