Description

Cuyp undoubtedly painted this panoramic river view in the studio from drawings made near the city of Dordrecht. The extreme horizontal format emphasizes the flatness of the land and the equilibrium between earth and water. The low horizon opens out to an expansive, cloud-laden sky, evoking the changeability of coastal weather. Symmetry of composition and limited color contribute to the contemplative mood that is a hallmark of Cuyp's art.
