Description

Godfried Schalcken, Dutch genre and portrait painter, studied under Hoogstraten, and afterwards under Gerhard Douw, whose works his earlier genre-pictures very closely resemble. He visited England and painted several portraits, of which the half-length of William III, now in the Museum, Amsterdam, is a good example.

The subject of this work is the Annunciation, the biblical event when the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has been chosen to become the mother of Christ. In Schalcken's highly personal interpretation of this traditional theme, the Virgin is in contemporary dress and the angel has no wings. The small size, high finish, and unconventional treatment of the topic indicate that the painting was intended for private devotion.
