 | Description | |
Like other Dutch artists of the period, Bega was a careful observer of physical appearances and human activity. Here he painted the cluttered world of an alchemist pursuing the ancient dream of changing base metals into gold. By the 1600s alchemy's status as a respectable science was in question, and Bega's portrayal of the chaos surrounding the alchemist, although compassionate, is a comment on time wasted.
