 | Description | |
The rich textures, elaborate costumes, and strong contrasts of light and shadow in this work reflect the influence of Dou's teacher, Rembrandt. Dou may have meant for this picture of the young Prince Rupert (1619-1682) and the elderly man to refer to the biblical characters of Samuel and his instructor, Eli. A nearby painting by Jan Lievensz is a possible pendant to this portrait. | More pictures | |
