 | Description | |
In this painting the priest Ahimelech presents David with the defeated Goliath's sword, as related in the Bible. David's conflict with the Philistine parallels the successful struggle of the Dutch for independence from Spain. The influence of Rembrandt's late style (as in his "Saint Bartholomew", displayed nearby) is evident in de Gelder's choice of half-length, life-size figures; a sober palette; and expressive brushstrokes.
