Description

Jupiter, King of the gods, was captivated by Europa, princess of Tyre, and transformed himself into a white bull in order to seduce her. Beguiled, Europa climbed on his back and was spirited across the sea to the continent that bears her name. Through gesture and expression, Rembrandt depicted the different kinds of distress felt by the princess and her retinue. He used the setting to heighten the drama, contrasting the immobility of the land with the shimmering movement of the sea and sky.
