 | Description | |
Arundel was one of the great patrons and collectors of art in England in the early 1600s. He was best known for his collection of Venetian paintings, which included works by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.
One of the most distinguished patrons and collectors of art of his time, Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel (1585-1646), was one of van Dyck's sponsors during the artist's first visit to England in 1620. During this trip, van Dyck painted Arundel, who holds in the left hand the badge of the Order of the Garter, a token of royal favor. The portrait reveals the artist's ability to present a sitter in a manner at once refined and sympathetic.
