 | Description | |
This oil sketch was probably painted in preparation for an altarpiece. It combines the freshness and fluency of a drawing with the monumentality of a large painting. These qualities are characteristic of the Flemish oil sketch, first developed by Peter Rubens as an alternative to drawing and then taken up by his most gifted pupil, van Dyck.
