 | Description | |
The subject of this painting - Saint John the Baptist - is nearly lost in the middle of the large crowd. The carefully rendered figures in the foreground are shown in fashions of the artist's own time instead of biblical dress. Representing all levels of society and occupied with games and conversation, they ignore the Baptist's preaching. Brueghel often painted landscapes that brilliantly exploited the jewel-like colors, fine details, and enamel hardness possible only on copper.
