 | Description | |
This signed and dated work is a rare depiction of dead game by van den Berghe, who typically painted landscapes and floral still lifes. Careful arrangement and faithful rendering of materials, surfaces, and textures characterize both the lifeless fowl and the delicate luxury objects, such as a Venetian-style flute of red wine (left) and a Chinese porcelain bowl (right) of the Wan-Li period (1573-1619). The short-live rose blossom may symbolize the transience of life.
