 | Description | |
The most influential French painter of his generation, Vouet was a master of brilliantly colored decorative paintings with mythological themes. Here the young mortal Adonis encounters Venus, goddess of love, while hunting in the woods. Such images were popular with sophisticated art patrons in Paris, to which the artist returned in 1627 after spending years in Rome, where he had absorbed the lessons of Italian Baroque painting.
