Description

Arms thrown wide, Saint Andrew implores the heavens above while soldiers tie him to a cross in the shape of an X.
This preparatory model was probably submitted for approval to the Goldsmiths' Guild of Paris, which had commissioned an altarpiece from Le Brun in 1646 for Notre Dame Cathedral. The accepted compositions, known as "les grands mays", installed in the cathedral on the first day of May in honor of the Virgin.
