Description

Le Sueur painted eight canvases illustrating "The Dream of Poliphilus" (1499), an extravagant tale by Francesco Colonna (about 1432-about1527) of a dream-journey through antiquity. Here the lovers Poliphilus and Polia are ferried by Cupid to Cythera, the island of love, as sea gods celebrate and pay homage.
