 | Description | |
The Annunciation is shown at the top of this altarpiece, while a host of saints flank the central image of Christ crowning his mother, Mary. The lower panels show, from left to right: Saint Benedict exorcising a devil, Saint John baptizing Christ, the death of the Virgin, Saint Anthony Abbot tormented by devil, and Saint Lawrence liberating a soul from purgatory. The altarpiece decorated a chapel dedicated to Saint Benedict in the Church of Santa Trinit?, Florence, which explains why Saint Benedict is portrayed twice, on the left panel and again in a predella scene below.
