 | Description | |
The saint's scroll is inscribed in Latin with his words announcing the coming of Christ: "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes [away the sin of the world]". The hair shirt alludes to John's ascetic life of prayer and penance. In the upper corners are Elijah and David, Old Testament prophets who proclaimed the coming of the Messiah. This panel was once part of an altarpiece, possibly in a church in Sienna.
