 | Description | |
Saint Luke the Evangelist, the patron saint of painters, is identified by the Latin inscription on this work. A winged ox -Luke's symbol- can be seen holding an inkwell as the saint writes the third Gospel. This panel was part of an altarpiece possibly executed for the city hall in Siena. The glowing colors, refined design, elegant forms, and intensity of the saint's expression are typical of Simone's style.
