 | Description | |
The popular legend of Catherine, princess of Alexandria, had only recently been written when this altarpiece was painted. In the center, the saint holds the palm of martyrdom and a book, symbol of her learning. The squares at left depict her conversion to Christianity, mystical marriage to the Christ child, and debate with pagan scholars. The scenes at right portray her torment in prison, miraculous survival of attempted execution by spiked wheels, and beheading.
