This devotional panel reflects an important turning point in late medieval Italian art. While the Virgin retains some of the rigid, otherworldly formality inherited from the orthodox icon tradition of the Byzantine Empire, a more down-to-earth humanity is evident in the infant Christ, who playfully tugs at his mother's cloak. This new interest in human intimacy would become a hallmark of Madonna and child imagery in the Renaissance.
