 | Description | |
This rare survivor of iconoclasm attests to the sophisticated Gothic style produced in England around 1400. The gilt tin-relief background and brilliant color juxtapositions suggest that it was painted by a Westphalian artist working in England. It was probably part of a larger ensemble. The attenuated proportions and attentive interaction between figures emphasize their anguish at the moment of Christ's death, in which the Virgin is comforted by Mary Magdalene and John the evangelist. At right the centurion, sporting a stylish forked beard and splendid contemporary costume, declares "Truly this was a son of God".
