 | Description | |
This panel of Christ crowning his mother, Mary, originally formed the front of a two-sided processional standard, which was carried in religious ceremonies in Gentile's native town of Fabriano. In this shimmering image, Gentile effectively used the complex patterning and intricate surface ornamentation that characterize the International Gothic style and recall the rich fabrics woven in Florence. Gentile was commissioned to paint this scene for his native town, Fabriano, when he was at the height of his fame.
