Description

According to legend, Pope Gregory the Great (about A.D.540-604) became aware during Mass of a disbeliever in his congregation. He prayed for a sign from God and was rewarded by the miraculous appearance of the crucified Christ with the instruments of his Passion. Ysenbrandt depicted the moment when Gregory first sees the vision, before the congregation reacts to the extraordinary event.
