 | Description | |
During his tenure as official painter to the Court of Wittenburg (in modern-day Germany), Cranach and his workshop produced hundreds of portraits of the three Saxon Court electors. John the Steadfast, identified here by the Latin inscription, was one of the strongest defenders of the Protestant reformation, a movement with which Cranach was intimately acquainted. In addiction to producing state portraits, as well as religious and mythological scenes as the painting nearby), he frequently depicted his friend, Martin Luther, instigator of the Reformation.
