Description

This painting represents the Incarnation, or conception of Christ, which was believed to have occurred when the archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary, "You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus". Bouts created a composition of surprising simplicity, minimizing symbolic details to focus attention on the expressions and gestures. This work was originally part of a large portable altarpiece depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
