 | Description | |
The cupids, sensuous reclining nude, and goat-footed Pan indicate that the subject of this allegory is love. The artist significantly altered his original composition, adding the god Pan and covering the red-robed goddess with a landscape (removed in the 1800s). In works such as this, Dosso transmitted the luminous coloring of Venetian painting to his native Ferrara, where he was court painter to the ruling Este family.
