Description

Painting that idealized rustic life became popular in Venice in the early 1500s, when pastoral poetry and drama also began to flourish. Created for a sophisticated urban audience, these works celebrated the presumed simplicity of rural ways. Although this painting was probably produced in Venice, Savoldo brought a realism typical of his native Lombardy to the lyricism of the Venetian pastoral tradition.
