Description

Shown here is the most profound mystical experience of Catherine of Sienna (1347-1380), a Dominican nun known for ministering to the sick and needy. Catherine knees in ecstasy as she miraculously receives Christ's wounds. Beccafumi, one of the foremost artists of Sienna in the 1500s, contrasts the golden rays piercing the saint's body with the harmonious light in the church to dramatize this encounter between the earthly and the divine.
