 | Description | |
Sebastiano was one of the leading portrait painters in Rome when he depicted Giulio de' Medici (1478-1534), who reigned as Pope Clement VII from 1523. His characterization of the pope as powerful, innately noble, and self-confident reflects the Renaissance cult of individuality. Aspiring to make his work last forever, the artist began experimenting with painting on stone around 1530. The Pope, apparently sharing this desire for an immortal image, commissioned this portrait on slate.
